I really enjoyed Umbrella Summer very much. The story of Annie Richards was touching and inspirational. The loss of a loved on at such a young age is hard, but when that loved one happens to be a sibling this makes it even more difficult. Add the fact that you’re only 10 and that your brother died suddenly at 12 year old and this make it all the more tragic. Annie was a very sympathetic character. I really found her very easy to relate to and I could understand why she became so obsessed with staying safe.
One of my favorite things about Umbrella Summer was, reading about the relationships that Annie forms with people around her. Annie befriends an elderly neighbor who moves in across the street. They both share their grief with each other and slowly begin to, “open their umbrella’s.” I also enjoyed reading about the relationship between Annie and her parents. They both start off so obsessed with their own grief that it takes them a while to notice how overly cautious Annie has become. Annie’s father is particular has really closed himself off emotionally.
The best part of Umbrella Summer was watching Annie grow and blossom as a character. She starts off as a child grieving the lose of her brother and by the end of the book she blossoms into a strong young woman.
I would recommend Umbrella Summer to anyone who enjoys coming of age stories.
