Give up the Ghost by Megan Crewe

Publication date: 9/15/09

Rating: 4 ghostly purrs

Summary:

Cass McKenna much prefers ghosts over “breathers.” Ghosts are uncomplicated and dependable, and they know the dirt on everybody…and Cass loves dirt. She’s on a mission to expose the dirty secrets of the poseurs in her school.

But when the vice president of the student council discovers her secret, Cass’s whole scheme hangs in the balance. Tim wants her to help him contact his recently deceased mother, and Cass reluctantly agrees.

As Cass becomes increasingly entwined in Tim’s life, she’s surprised to realize he’s not so bad—and he needs help more desperately than anyone else suspects. Maybe it’s time to give the living another chance….

Thoughts:

Dear readers, I would to start off my apologizing for the start of this review. I am about to use the evil C word and I am truly sorry for that. Give up the Ghost by Megan Crewe was both a cute (sorry, please forgive me for the use of that word) and serious book. I never imagined that a book about a girl who sees ghost could be described as cute, but Cass was such an adorable and angst ridden teenage character. Pissed off female just rock my socks!

Cass’s attitude will most likely be off-putting to some readers. But I could definitely understand where Cass’s anger was coming from. Teenage girls can be extremely mean and nasty towards each other. Cass just uses what abilities she has to keep people from hurting her. That is totally understandable don’t you think? I thoroughly enjoyed reading about how Cass communicates with the ghosts in her life. The ghosts in school help Cass get dirt of an of her classmates. Some of the dirt that Cass would get from them just made me laugh out loud.

The more serious aspects in Give up the Ghost revolve around Cass, her sister, and fellow classmate Tim. There are some bitter feelings between Megan and the ghost of her sister, because Cass believes that she was always their parents favorite daughter. Megan has a much closer relationship to her sister now that she is dead as she is invisible to everyone else. The relationship between Cass and her sister just pulled at my heartstrings. The relationship that develops between Tim and Cass is equally heart warming. I was not expecting this book to make me as misty eyed as it did. Through her relationship with Tim, Cass finds another way to use her abilities, to help people. As a character, Cass grows leaps and bounds by the end of Give up the Ghost and I love her for that.

Give up the Ghost comes highly recommended from me. Read it, love it, and enjoy it as much as I did! I really hope that there are going to be future books in this series. There were still some unanswered questions I had about the ghosts and Cass’s abilities.
