Summary via goodreads:

Meghan Chase has never fit in at her small-town high school, and now, on the eve of her 16th birthday, she discovers why. When her half brother is kidnapped, Meghan is drawn into a fantastical world she never imagined--the world of Faery, where anything you see may try to eat you, and Meghan is the daughter of the summer faery king. Now she will journey into the depths of Faery to face an unknown enemy . . . and beg the help of a winter prince who might as soon kill her as let her touch his icy heart. The Iron King is the first book in the Iron Fey series.

Thoughts:

THERE IS AN AWESOME CAT IN THIS BOOK!!! WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE?

There are like five million young adult fairy books out right now. I can name close to a dozen of them just off the top of my head. Does The Iron King stand out at all among all of the other fairy books out right now?

The plot might be exactly original, but the writing was excellent. From page one I was immediately transported into the world of Meghan. I've been reading too many young adult novels with female characters that fall into the too stupid to live category. It was quite refreshing to come across a female character that actually knows how to hold her own when surrounded by a group of bad guys. It also helped that Meghan had the help of a totally kick butt cat throughout most of the book.

I just could not get enough of Grimalkin! I think of Grimalkin as a tougher and grittier version of the Chesire cat. Julie did an amazing job of capturing the attitude and thought processes of a cat. I never once felt like I was reading about a humanized cat. Grimalkin was 110% feline. This brings me to one of my criticisms; there were times when I wanted to read about Grimalkin more than the Meghan. This might just be due to the fact that I'm a crazy cat lady and not the fault of the author. I'll let you guys decide on that one!

This is a Harlequin Teen book and naturally there was obviously plenty of romance. Hmmmm...I never know what to write about romance in books as I am not a huge fan of it.There were certainly some sizzling scenes in The Iron King, but they didn't interest me as much as the action parts of the story. There was a lot of action in The Iron King and a surprising amount of violence. I was surprised by just how scary the book got at times.

I have never read A Midsummer Night's Dream, so all of the references to the play and its' characters were completely lost on me. Thankfully Julie describes what is happening in a way that Shakespearian ignorant people like myself can understand. Thank goodness for that because I will not be reading the play anytime soon.

My favorite thing about The Iron King was the setting. It was magical, beautiful, and frightening. I wanted to jump into the book and join Meghan in her adventures. I also wanted to kidnap Grimalkin and make him my pet, but I'll leave that discussion for another time.

I would recommend that cat lovers and fans of fairy books go out and buy The Iron King when it comes out. The rest of you can take it out of the library. Either way it is a fun book to read and totally worth your time.

P.S. You might also love this book is you are a fan of the 80s movie Labyrinth. I had that David Bowe song in my head for hours after finishing this book. *The babe with the power. What power?*
