Thoughts:
THERE IS AN AWESOME CAT IN THIS BOOK!!! WHAT IS NOT TO LOVE?
There are like five million young adult fairy books out right now. I can name close to a dozen of them just off the top of my head. Does The Iron King stand out at all among all of the other fairy books out right now?
The plot might be exactly original, but the writing was excellent. From page one I was immediately transported into the world of Meghan. I've been reading too many young adult novels with female characters that fall into the too stupid to live category. It was quite refreshing to come across a female character that actually knows how to hold her own when surrounded by a group of bad guys. It also helped that Meghan had the help of a totally kick butt cat throughout most of the book.
I just could not get enough of Grimalkin! I think of Grimalkin as a tougher and grittier version of the Chesire cat. Julie did an amazing job of capturing the attitude and thought processes of a cat. I never once felt like I was reading about a humanized cat. Grimalkin was 110% feline. This brings me to one of my criticisms; there were times when I wanted to read about Grimalkin more than the Meghan. This might just be due to the fact that I'm a crazy cat lady and not the fault of the author. I'll let you guys decide on that one!
This is a Harlequin Teen book and naturally there was obviously plenty of romance. Hmmmm...I never know what to write about romance in books as I am not a huge fan of it.There were certainly some sizzling scenes in The Iron King, but they didn't interest me as much as the action parts of the story. There was a lot of action in The Iron King and a surprising amount of violence. I was surprised by just how scary the book got at times.
I have never read A Midsummer Night's Dream, so all of the references to the play and its' characters were completely lost on me. Thankfully Julie describes what is happening in a way that Shakespearian ignorant people like myself can understand. Thank goodness for that because I will not be reading the play anytime soon.
My favorite thing about The Iron King was the setting. It was magical, beautiful, and frightening. I wanted to jump into the book and join Meghan in her adventures. I also wanted to kidnap Grimalkin and make him my pet, but I'll leave that discussion for another time.
I would recommend that cat lovers and fans of fairy books go out and buy The Iron King when it comes out. The rest of you can take it out of the library. Either way it is a fun book to read and totally worth your time.
P.S. You might also love this book is you are a fan of the 80s movie Labyrinth. I had that David Bowe song in my head for hours after finishing this book. *The babe with the power. What power?*

Sounds fun! Thanks for the heads up. Will be checking this one out.
November 16, 2009 4:55 PM
I'm reading an ARC of it right now! And I agree the characterization and setting are outta sight! Love Grim---is that technically feline-ization? Caterization? (Not to be confused with catheterization, ew.)
I'm just starting to get to the romance...hmm, have to be patient!
Skip those other books about faeries! THIS is the one you want!

You remind me of the babe...what babe? the babe with power. The power of voo-doo. Who do? You do!
Okay basically that reference has pretty much made this book number 1 on my to-obtain list as of right now.

With a lot of fairy books out there it's really hard to pick one to read. I'll give this a try if I have a chance since you seem to love The Iron King really much. And a cat in a fairy book? CUTE!
November 16, 2009 11:27 PM
This looks so good! Thanks for the review!
November 17, 2009 2:57 AM
This book looks wonderful - with an awesome cat, of course it will be, like you said.
As for the not so original plot - I feel like it's hard to have an original plot nowadays, in any case. :-)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I must get my hands on this book, especially since I am a crazy cat man (doesn't have as much of a ring as "crazy cat lady", does it?). It sounds like such a great read. Loved your review!! :)

Thank you for the review! I'm glad that Kagawa explains the Shakespeare stuff in an understandable way for I have NOT read any Shakespeare (yet?).
Grimalkin sounds soo cool (: I heart the Cheshire Cat. Cheshire is one of my fave characters of ALL time.
December 30, 2009 5:35 PM
So just the name Grimalkin makes me want to read it but there being action and Shakespeare references (from one of the few I enjoyed at school)makes it a must read-
I also love the Labyrinth.
Really nice review.

I had no idea there were Midsummer references in it! That is so full of win! Also, that there are scary parts and its not all about happy faeries :)
December 30, 2009 9:17 PM
haha, well I'm not a fan of cats, i'm a dog person, but I like Faerie stories, and this one look good, specially with the description of the principal Character, Meghan, who breaks that category, as you said, too stupid to live, haha, It sounds funny :)
December 30, 2009 9:20 PM
Thanks for a great review. You have helped paint a better picture of just what this story/book is about. I wanted to read it even before reading your review, however now I want to get my hands on this book and read it even more.

This sounds awesome and I've been trying to get my hands on an ARC for a while. I've read some awful Fae stories so I'm hoping this one's a stand-out in a good way. Thanks for a great review and hosting the contest--now I'm even more excited!
January 3, 2010 6:34 AM
Super cool kitty! YAY! And now that I know Meghan isn't like many of the TSTL female characters, I'm even more excited! I get so sick of those kind of characters, I want smart girls!
January 3, 2010 11:11 AM
Wow "cat lovers and fans of fairy books" thats me!!
I'm happy that finally some people think the same that me about the female characters: "too stupid to live category" thats not cool....I hate that kind of character. At least this book is different, I really want to read it!
I already love Grimalkin, "a tougher and grittier version of the Chesire cat" Just because of that I must read this book, hehe.

January 10, 2010 11:40 AM
I'm not a major fan of romance in books either. I mean, sometimes I like it (if it works) but only if there's plenty else going on to keep me interested.
As awesome cats in books go, if you haven't read Obernewtyn yet you should.
January 13, 2010 1:00 AM
Okay, you've won me with the cat and the David Bowie reference! Although I'm not a big fan of romance, like you, I think I can overlook it for the other parts. I can't wait to read the cat parts as I'm a MAJOR cat lover!
Great review!
January 14, 2010 3:55 PM
You pretty much had me sold then you mentioned The Labyrinth and now I NEED THIS BOOK!
Great review :)
January 14, 2010 4:03 PM
I don't think that there enough good fey YA out there, so I'm pumped about THE IRON KING. I'm a fan of books w/steamy romance - and the other Harlequin Teen books, up to this point, haven't really intrigued me all that much... TIK looks sooo good though!
Aaaand, Labyrinth!? I haven't seen that in forever, but I'm pretty sure I was obsessed w/it when I was younger. And I could never tell if Bowie was a girl or a guy. It really freaked me out. :(
January 14, 2010 4:49 PM
That book looks sooo good ^^ and the cover is awesome. Great Review ;)
January 14, 2010 5:07 PM
