Some Girls Are by Courtney Summers
Publication date: 1/5/10 (today!)
Received from publishers for review
Rating: 4 bitchy purrs
Summary:
Climbing to the top of the social ladder is hard--falling from it is even harder. Regina Afton used to be a member of the Fearsome Fivesome, an all-girl clique both feared and revered by the students at Hallowell High... until vicious rumors about her and her best friend's boyfriend start going around. Now Regina's been "frozen out" and her ex-best friends are out for revenge. If Regina was guilty, it would be one thing, but the rumors are far from the terrifying truth and the bullying is getting more intense by the day. She takes solace in the company of Michael Hayden, a misfit with a tragic past who she herself used to bully. Friendship doesn't come easily for these onetime enemies, and as Regina works hard to make amends for her past, she realizes Michael could be more than just a friend... if threats from the Fearsome Foursome don't break them both first.
Thoughts:
O_O Wow! Courtney Summers is either an evil genius, a crazy person, or a brilliant writer. I'll let you guys examine the evidence for yourselves.
Exhibit A: Some Girls Are was impossible to put down once I started reading it. Courtney Summers creates a world of crazy teenagers who fight, bully, and stab each other in the back. It was all like watching an episode of a soap opera, I just had to know what was going to happen next.
Exhibit B: Regina is a fully developed character that you start off hating, but eventually come to love. In fact all of the characters are totally believable. I started off hating Regina, but she slowly grew and me and I being routing for her by the end. Regina was one tough cookie. I was just in awe of her bravado for much the book. The girl has got balls!
Exhibit C: Regina's ex-friends are beyond crazy. I found myself thinking "oh no they didn't!" through much of the book. Who does things like this in real life? At times it was a little too extreme though. That is my only criticism.
Exhibit D: There were a few times when it was almost possible to sympathize with Regina's biggest tormentor Anna.
Exhibit E: Have I mentioned how crazy the people are in this book? I did? Oh well, it bears repeating since we are question the sanity of the author here.
The verdict: Courtney Summers is a brilliant writer, a little crazy, and an evil genius. Only a brilliant write could make me sympathize was a bitchy female, only a slightly nutty person could come up with the characters in this book, and only an evil genius could make me love a book like Some Girls Are.

Great review! I loved how Regina didn't lay down and take everything those crazy snatches did to her. I know it's only 5 day into the new year, but I do believe this is one of my favs for 2010. So good!

I've seen this around the book blogging community, I might check this out.
I'm kind of going through a similar thing at school *from the bio*, so it might help reading a book on it.
Thanks for the great review.

hmm.. kind of old but there are some twists in the story. Fear, attraction and friendship don't work apart but its about combined effect. It will be a nice book ;)

I'm looking forward to reading this one! Although things like the "Fearsome Five" always make me roll my eyes... it's not like bullying is QUITE that organized.
