Tell Me a Secret by Holly Cupala
Publication date: 6/22/10, Harperteen
FTC: received arc from publisher
Rating: 5 purrs!

Summary:

Tell me a secret, and I'll tell you one…

In the five years since her bad-girl sister Xanda’s death, Miranda Mathison has wondered about the secret her sister took to the grave, and what really happened the night she died. Now, just as Miranda is on the cusp of her dreams—a best friend to unlock her sister’s world, a ticket to art school, and a boyfriend to fly her away from it all—Miranda has a secret all her own.

Then two lines on a pregnancy test confirm her worst fears. Stripped of her former life, Miranda must make a choice with tremendous consequences and finally face her sister’s demons and her own.

Thoughts:

Have you ever read a book that made you want to leap into its pages and throw cats at the characters? No, well I guarantee that Tell Me A Secret will change that. I can't remember the last time a book pissed me off so much. I don't mean this in a negative way. Sometimes it is good when a book pisses you off. I gave Tell Me a Secret 5 purrs because I cannot remember the last time I became so emotionally invested in a book. I experienced anger, sadness, and happiness at different periods throughout the book. I even found myself getting a little teary eyed a couple of times (actually cried like a baby shhh...).

Miranda is such a well written character that you cannot help but react emotionally. The loss of her sister Xanda leads her to make some very stupid choices. One of which is ditching a long-time friend to become besties with the ultimate mean girl. Looking for a replacement for her sister, Miranda instead winds up pregnant and friendless. There were time when I wanted to throw a cat at Miranda for being so stupid, but alas I loved her too much to stay mad at her. Miranda was impossible for me now to like because she was so strong. I don't think I could have handled her situation as well as she did.

It also doesn't help Miranda that her family is completely dysfunctional. Miranda basically has no one to help her through her pregnancy until she meets a new friend at work. I thought that the issue of teen pregnancy was handled rather well in Tell Me a Secret. Miranda considers her baby to be a replacement on sorts for his dead sister, but the author never shies away from the negatives of being a teen mom. Miranda's pregnancy is never romanticized nor glamorized.

Miranda's relationship with her family is very complex. Her mother is a judgmental bitch and her father is emotionally distant. However, as Miranda's pregnancy progresses her relationship with her family changes drastically. By the end of the story they come to an understanding of sorts. Though I honestly don't know how Miranda could ever forgive her mother for some of the things she did.

I could go on and on about how amazing this book was, but I don't want to bore you all. Tell Me a Secret was a real page turner. The pacing and format of it was perfect. I was never bored or confused by anything that was happening. I pretty much picked Tell Me a Secret up and didn't put it down again until I was finished.

I enjoyed Tell Me a Secret so much, that I have decided to host an international contest for my arc.

A literary character that pissed me off was Jacob Black in Eclipse. He always seemed to be whining about everything, and it got really annoying. I just wanted to tell him to stop whining!

The character I choose is Sarah Howard from My Ridiculous, Romantic Obsessions. I found myself getting so pissed at her, just because she had her mind set on the fact that the guy didn't like her, even though it was sooo obvious he did!

Great review This sounds soo good -

Honestly a character I can say I honestly HATED with a passion is Regina Afton from Some Girls Are - OMG that girl I hated her, I did not like her at all she's mean, rude, and hateful though out most of the book - though she turns around, UGH I hated her - but I loved that I did, it was a wonderful WONDERFUL book!

Janie from Wake/Fade/Gone. OMG, whine whine whine! Everyone has problems and though her's are worse, that doesn't necessarily mean you should push away the people closest to you. Or keep everything to yourself. Sit around a mope? Not my style!

Lately it would be Lindsey or Juliet from Before I Fall. Lindsey was just a total hypocrite, mean and annoying. I get why Sam cares about her but she deserved at least one royal butt kicking. And Juliet? She was just too kind. She was going to kill herself and keep the secret? Come on! She should of had Lindsey humiliated for once! Anyhow, I love when you are so passionate about the character that you can't stand them! Makes them more real.

Hannah Baker in Thirteen Reasons Why. She and the end of that book pissed me off so much. I felt like I was being torn apart when that book was over. Sad, angry, exposed, creeped out, strangely satisfied by the bright spots even though they weren't enough to save Hannah. Argh. You get the idea...

I was so irritated with him for until about the last 50 pages of that book, like rolling my eyes and not wanting to see his name on any of the pages... Bella Swan. She is sooooooo needy and clingy and horrible to be a role model, I can't understand why her life has to be so influenced by Edward. Even though Meyer says she's protective of her family and all, but seriously it's more like only Edward. The protective-of-family-Bella is quite different from the usual Bella. If she is really protective and cares a lot for them, why would she be that way after Edward left to worry her parents? Gosh she can't live without Edward. If she is really that way, she would also talk more about her parents and friends right?! WHY 95% about Edward. Oh then she fell for Jacob, and did not stop his beyond-friends-actions and etc!!! WHY after meeting sparkly Edward, she has to live with a boyfriend or else her world falls apart?! But in fourth book she's slightly more likeable. Oh wait, since the books are from HER point of view, the Cullens (except for Edward of course) and her friends, they are ALL such minor characters. They deserve to shine more. I get it Bella, Edward is perfect, Edward is sparkling vampire, Edward's body is cold. I get it already, stop repeating!

A literary character that pissed me off is Elena from The Vampire Diaries. I mean, she thought the hell of herself without actually realizing that she was nothing! Nada! I hate how she demeans others, tries to use them for her selfish purposes. And all I see her doing is chasing after the brothers...I don't think she has any other purpose in life. I read the books because they are a sort of classic but had a really hard time getting through just because of Elena!

Well the first one that comes to mind is Richard Zeeman from the later novels in the Anita Blake series. He can just get on your last nerve with his high morals, ugh. At one point I felt so my for Anita that I wanted to pull my own hair out! Gosh!

Right now, I am reading Shade, and the character Logan is really annoying me. He has the traits of a stalker and is a complete jerk to his family.

Hmm, let's see. Katniss from THE HUNGER GAMES made me pretty mad. Doesn't she see that Peeta is completely head over heels for her? Come on, girl, wake up! I wanted to go shake her or something.

    great contest!

well, Sylvie from Splendor Falls, the book I'm reading now, is really making me mad. She is very negative about everything. it gets quite annoying afer a while. Hopefullly, though it will get better.

I can't stand Zoey Redbird from the House of Night series. She is so self-absorbed and annoying. I like most of the secondary characters, but she really gets under my skin.

Kelly from "The Sword" by Jean Johnson. She thinks she's better than anyone and gives orders constantly, and the worst thing is, they listen to her!

I'm seconding Elena from the Vampire Diaries books. On the show, she's cool, but in the books she's just... GRR. When I tried rereading them last year, I couldn't get into them at all because she annoyed me so much.

Max Tivoli from "Mr. Tivoli" irritated the living beejeezus out of me. He was the most self-centered main character in a romance I could possibly imagine. I marveled that the book was well-written enough to make me read it just to find out what happened to him and those he messed with.
